![]() It is important to note that while composite screws eliminate the need to pre-drill the vast majority of the deck, pre-drilling is still required around the perimeter (within 1" of the end of the board) as well as on stair treads. There are a few companies manufacturing plugging systems including Starborn Industries Pro Plug System for PVC and FastenMaster. The most recent advancements in composite screw technology now can be seen in the form of "pre-drill free" plugging systems for composite and capstock decking. With very few exceptions, deck boards by all of the above-mentioned companies are compatible with composite deck fasteners. Those companies were Azek, TimberTech (now owned by Azek's parent company), Fiberon, Trex, and Evergrain. I read an article which stated that 95% of the composite decking market was owned by 5 companies. These screws feature reverse threads just under the head which prevents mushrooming (a small bump on the deck board around the head of the fastener) as well as white shearing (stretching of the capstock material around the screw head producing a white "halo") which have been a problem for previous deck fasteners. The Cap-Tor xd screws are available in an epoxy coated steel version as well as a stainless steel version. Today, the industry leader in composite deck fastener technology is a company called Starborn Industries with its Cap-Tor xd fasteners. Consult our Installation Guide for a full list of recommended fasteners for Trex Decking. To attach the outside edge of the deck board, use approved, color matched, composite deck screws. Since then, many companies have come out with their own versions of composite deck fasteners, making improvements along the way. Trex Enhance boards have a scalloped profile. The first company to experience market penetration with a composite deck fastener was FastenMaster with its "Trapease" branded screws. However, with advancements in fastener technology, pre-drilling in most composite and capstock deck boards is no longer necessary.Ĭomposite deck screws have been consistently used by the industry. In the past, no matter what type of deck board you were installing, the answer to this question would indefinitely be yes. ![]() Sheet Metal Screws and Self-Drilling Screwsĭo I Need to Pre-Drill My Composite or Capstock Decking?.NailPro® Tools for Concrete and Steel Fastening.Stainless Steel Quik-Drive® Collated Screws.Stainless Steel Screws for Composite Decks.Stainless Steel Decking Screws -Star Drive.Stainless Steel Decking Screws - Square Drive.EB-TY® Premium Hidden Deck-Fastening System™.Hex Cap Bolts (Screws) - 18-8SS & 316SS.Simpson Joist Hangers, Straps & Connectors.

Linked blockades sprung up in other parts of the country, including one at a major US border crossing that lasted six days and cost billions in lost trade. They swore in their own ‘peace officers’ and reportedly attempted to arrest members of the Ottawa police. They dug in with a network of satellite camps in other parts of the city and surrounding rural areas to keep occupiers fed and fuelled. Once in Ottawa, convoy organisers - some with very recent police and military experience - moved quickly to cement their successful occupation. They wanted demonstrations to become ‘Canada’s January 6th’, in reference to the storming of the US Capitol, and just in case their intent wasn’t clear enough, they even issued a pseudo-legal manifesto of demands that focused on ousting sitting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. ![]() Organisers were openly calling for civil war and stating their intention to drive massive trucks - which can easily hide or become weapons - to the gates of Parliament. Well before trucks rolled into Ottawa, the threat of violence in the capital was obvious to security experts. In general, however, the media coverage of the early days of the occupation treated it as a loud but benign protest.īut from the very outset, this chaotic gathering was animated by a troubling and extremist agenda. The lawless mood at times turned dark, as protesters danced on the hallowed Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, or threatened or assaulted local workers and residents. There were bouncy castles for kids, fireworks, DJ’d dance parties in streets blocked off by semi-trucks, and a festival ambiance. On weekends, the police inexplicably stood back as the blockaded streets filled with a mix of people opposed to Covid-19 restrictions and vaccines, conspiracy theorists, and those united by a dislike of the sitting government. Canada’s so-called trucker protests are evidence of the growing grip of disinformation, and the emergence of new and troubling home-grown threats to national security. The story of how this small group of convoy occupiers ended up triggering a national, provincial, and local state of emergency while shutting down the capital of a G7 country, is a cautionary tale for anyone who believes that Canada has escaped the toxic right-wing populism that has so divided our neighbours to the south. Canada isn’t immune to right-wing extremism As for the truckers, it’s estimated that nine in ten are fully vaccinated, and the industry has firmly distanced itself from the protests. Almost 85 per cent of eligible Canadians are fully vaccinated, among the highest vaccination rates in the world, and only a third of Canadians say they are ready to drop all Covid-19 restrictions. The protest’s theme grew murky as thousands of people joined on foot for what would become a chaotic, ongoing occupation of Canada’s capital city, steps from its seat of government.Īlthough convoy organisers and their supporters like to paint a picture of a divided country, in reality Canadians have been relatively unified in support of strong health measures over the course of the pandemic. The situation began in late January, when convoys made up of hundreds of tractor-trailers and personal vehicles converged on Ottawa to protest new rules requiring cross-border truckers to be vaccinated. Instead, the ongoing occupation has laid bare the increasing threat of home-grown populist, right-wing extremism and revealed deep problems in Canada’s democratic institutions. More than three weeks after a convoy of transport trucks first rolled into Canada’s capital city Ottawa and stayed, it’s become clear that this protest was never about truckers, vaccine mandates, or even about Covid-19 restrictions. ![]() Four Quarters features the best craft beers and a cocktail menu packed with old classics and in-house inventions. You will become the Leonardo Da Vinci of chaos and destruction (and meddling sheep) once you have mastered the concepts of Besiege. Thanks to this initiative, Besiege works even in some outdated computers. Forget open worlds or long, empty landscapes. In that sense, the graphics are very practical: the game only shows the surroundings you can destroy. It is impossible to get annoyed when that happens, because most of the times you will laugh at your own mistakes on top of learning from them. What little remains will start to get out of control, and all hell breaks loose. If your machines catches fire (or you set fire to it yourself, which is more likely), it will be partially destroyed. Everything in the game behaves realistically. You can always try it out yourself, but it might slow down progress during the first couple of hours, or get on your nerves because you expected to be able to create huge machines right from the start.īesiege's physics system is the other winner. We did miss some sort of basic engineering manual to find out exactly what each element of Besiege does. And if you think you have created the ultimate weapon, remember you can save it for future use. If it didn't work out or you want to remodel your creation, you can remove elements, move them, or undo your last actions. You just have to select the element you want to install on your machine next, and then click wherever you want to put it. And don't forget the weapons, like flamethrowers, explosives or fireballs.Ĭapturing your atrocious ideas on the game is easy, quick and intuitive. So why did Cho kill Song and her family? There remains a lack of a plausible motive, but the fact remains he still committed the murders.įrank Santoro, the Deputy District Attorney, said the murders were “sophisticated and deliberate.” Byung Song also accused Cho of trying to confuse the investigation to make him the prime suspect. Cho spoke very good English, which was a status symbol in the community.Ĭho ended up receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in 2012. But within the Korean immigrant community, he was a very trustworthy person. However, Cho never had any real credentials or licenses. Cho lived three floors below Charis Song.Ĭho ran a Ponzi scheme in the community which Adair and Choi say eventually became a multi-million dollar scheme. In 2012, the Los Angeles Times reported authorities finally found a DNA match with a neighbor named Robin Kyu Cho. They drove fancy cars and owned a business, and they were thought of as very successful in Koreatown.īut there was still not enough evidence to prove Song was guilty of the murders, so it became a cold case, for a very long time. ![]() Song and his wife were having marital problems, but for the community, the Song family was very well off. There was no DNA link between Byung Song and the crime, but the lead investigator for the case still believed Song was involved. The Koreatown daily newspapers did not help: they camped outside Song’s business and church, looking for evidence Song may be guilty of killing his wife, son, and nanny. He was the immediate suspect, and law enforcement did not believe him when he said he was not involved in the murders. They started looking for the most obvious suspect: Byung Song, Song’s husband, who was a businessman in the community. The Korean community was also shocked at Song’s husband possibly being involved, a former Korean Marine, self-made businessman, and respected churchgoer. Ben Adair and Sharon Choi say in the Strangeland podcast that the murders shocked Koreatown, and daily newspapers covered the murders frequently and revealed intensely personal details about Charis Song and her family. The case actually had DNA evidence, but authorities were unable to find DNA for the suspect. Her hands were bound and her mouth was gagged with duct tape, and she was found slumped along the bathroom floor. It was a brutal crime scene that seemed to lack a motive. Their names were Eun Sik Min, a 56-year-old woman, Charis Song, a 30-year-old mother, and Nathan Song, a two-year-old toddler.Īccording to Suzie Suh at CBS Los Angeles, the murders shocked the whole Miracle Mile area.
